How to Use Tile Leveling Systems: The Complete 2026 Guide

What Is a Tile Leveling System?

A tile leveling system is a set of tools — clips, wedges, and pliers — designed to eliminate lippage (uneven edges) between adjacent tiles during installation. Whether you are laying large-format floor tiles or wall tiles, these systems ensure a perfectly flat, professional finish every time.

At Yueqing Zebra Tools Co., Ltd., we manufacture high-quality plastic tile leveling systems used by professional contractors in over 20 countries.

Why Use a Tile Leveling System?

  • Eliminates Lippage — Prevents one tile edge from sitting higher than its neighbor
  • Faster Installation — Reduces installation time by up to 30% vs spacer-only methods
  • Consistent Results — Professional-grade flatness for all skill levels
  • Works with Large Format Tiles — Essential for tiles 60×60 cm and larger

Types of Tile Leveling Systems

1. Wedge-Type (Clip & Wedge) System

The most common and affordable type. A plastic clip sits under the tile edge, and a wedge pulls adjacent tiles flush.

2. T-Type (Screw Cap) System

Uses threaded posts and screw-on caps for precise height control. Fully reusable.

3. Horseshoe Shim System

U-shaped shims slide under tiles to adjust height differences. Best for fixing minor unevenness.

Step-by-Step Installation

  1. Spread adhesive with notched trowel
  2. Insert clips under tile edges (every 30-40 cm)
  3. Press adjacent tile firmly into adhesive
  4. Insert wedges through clips, push until flush
  5. Use spirit level and Height Locator to verify
  6. Wait 24 hours for adhesive to cure
  7. Kick clip tabs sideways to break off
  8. Grout as normal — broken bases remain hidden

How Many Clips Do You Need?

For 60×60 cm tiles: ~70 clips/10 sqm (floor), ~100 clips/10 sqm (wall), ~120 clips/10 sqm (large format 120×120 cm).

We sell clips in 100 pcs/bag with wholesale pricing.

Pro Tips

  • Match clip thickness to joint width (1mm–3mm)
  • Use Horseshoe Shims on uneven substrates before clips
  • Keep spare wedges — they are reusable
  • Invest in a Complete Starter Kit if new to leveling
